Simply Lovely

Mindi, Harris and I decided to get out of the house yesterday. It was pleasantly not freezing, not windy, and sunny- we figured we would take advantage of it. We packed the diaper bag, the boy and our awesome stroller into the car, (which I love MORE AND MORE every time we use it...) and drove to the K****A Japanese Garden- the little ray of sunshine on the wart of our hideous little section of Seattle. It was fantastic! We strolled around, enjoying the rhododendrons that were just getting ready to bloom gloriously (I think we will go back in a few weeks to check the progress), and enjoyed the fountains and waterfalls dotting the landscape. We fed the boy a bottle and had a little photo shoot with Momma Mindi and Harris. It was a sweet day- one I am eager to repeat!

P.S.- for the other lesbian moms with children that have started to "talk" to you- what do your kids call the 2 of you? Mom and Mom or..... I am struggling with this one...

  1. We started with Mama and Mommy. Now our 3 year old daughter has changed it up again. She calls Margot - Mommy and me - mom mom, mom, or mama.

We figure it's her call and so far we've been quite pleased at her selections. We we she gets older the words might not be as kind!

  2. Cute! I like Harris's little green sweatsuit.

We haven't put much thought into what our baby will call us... bu I'm not a fan of "mama" so maybe both mom? I feel like he/she will figure something out...

  3. We are Mommy/Momma and Baba - not that Elsie is talking, but that is what we are calling ourselves.

  7. such beautiful photos -- it's great to get to see Mindi with Harris too! As for the name question, many of the 2-mom families I know (and their kids are now nearly teens) have used mommy and momma/mama -- the 'mom' thing evolving as well, and it surprises me how old my friend's son is (13) and still calls his mom 'mommy'. Some Jewish couples I know have gone with Mommy and Ima (Hebrew). Nice to imagine the rhododendrons and all that is beginning to be springlike in the NW...

  8. M.- funny that you mention Ima- that is what we are currently doing. Mindi is mommy and I am Ima. Even that, however, despite the fact that Ima is literally mom in Hebrew, feels a little too far away from Mom to me. Luckily, mindi has been fondly refering to me as Imama. I think I like that. :)

  9. We do mama for me and mommy for my partner. I let her decide what she wanted to be called since I "got" to have so many other things as I am the birth mother. He also calls us by our first names a lot (normal development at 5) but I've noticed he does it more with other adults, as though he wants to be clear who is who. I don't know....

Enjoy those sunny breaks, it can be rotten here in the NW!

  10. i am mama, my partner is mommy. sometimes she calls either of us the nickname that the other uses. for example, i sometimes say, "bae.... next time ryan needs to get her attention she says "bae!" in the same tone that i use. it's actually quite funny...

  11. I, bio-mom am MaMa and my partner is Mommy. Max who is 4 still refers to us this way and Cooper 1 calls us both MaMa but if we ask for clarification, I'll say and point Mommy? or MaMa? He will identify correctly.

  12. I've been a lurker for awhile, but wanted to comment on this. I had always dreamed of being a "mommy" and since my partner didn't care what she was called, I got it. She is mama, and when other people refer to one of us with the "wrong" name, our kids correct them. They know who is who.

  13. We were talking about this "name game" recently. We haven't really come up with an answer, so hearing everyone's input was great. :)
I'm glad you like your stroller. If we have twins, I'd like to get the Contours Options Tandem. It looks so handy and stylish!

  14. Our son, now 4, calls me (birthmum) "mummy" or just plain "mum" and his other mother "mama". Many of our friends are also mum and mama. We also know of a mum and mimi.

The only person that has a problem with Mason calling his mothers both by "mum-type" names is my mum! As far as Mason is concerned, the names are different and go with the person, he knows exactly which one is which! Of course that doesn't stop me from getting our names confused from time to time!

  15. We are going to be Mama and Mommy. But I guess that could change when a baby comes - maybe s/he will change all that.

p.s. I tagged you on our blog

  16. My twins call me Mommy and my partner Mama. In the beginning, my daughter called me Mimi, because that was her attempt at saying Mommy. It was darling...but it faded as she grew. Now they say Mommy and Mama when referring to one of us.
